But the madam didn’t kill Hourie. In fact, she didn’t appear all of that day. The girls, who were used to her occasional days of complete seclusion—days when she stayed in her room all day, not sending for tea or for paan, not showing her face outside her room—stayed away. The madam was prone to get wild and hurl both abuses and more physically painful things: Sudha had once been hit by a well-aimed brass vase. Shortly after sundown, though, the first customer of the day arrived. The servant whose duty it was to receive clients and point them upstairs to the madam’s room, was at a loss. He made the visitor sit on a stool at the foot of the stairs, while he ascended to the madam’s room. The door was closed, the room beyond the lacy curtains a well of darkness. The servant stood outside and cleared his throat. A minute later, he coughed loudly, then again. There was no response from beyond the forbidding blue-painted door.
